The KU Emblem

Representing the kissaki (point of a warrior’s sword) and the fude-saki (tip of a calligrapher’s brush), the KU emblem exemplifies the bunburyōdō (文武両道), the classical twin paths of “the pen & the sword; the arts of war and peace,” underscoring the importance of balancing physical training with literary study in the pursuit of mastering the self.

The logo designed in 1988 was hand-brushed at Hanshi McCarthy’s request by Zen Monk Sozen.

The Chinese pictographs under the brush art read Koryu Uchinadi (Old Style Okinawan hand).
